I feel like adding in Calala island to the list is premature. Just because it opened up on points recently and is crazy expensive shouldn’t qualify it as “good as it gets if you’re looking for a remote and exotic stay”. Have you been there? Can you definitively say it’s better than PH Maldives?

Personally, I’ve found the best use of points to be paying the standard rate for a base room and upgrading to a Premium suite for 9K points. I’ve gotten 25-45cpp value out of this method. I used this for a 2 story Penthouse at PH Beijing, a space with a fireplace at the PH Seoul, and a suite with a Grand Piano at the PH Tokyo. Any of which retail at $2,500-$4500+ a night.

We stayed 3 nights in the Park Hyatt Sydney in early October (the weather in Sydney was wonderful at that time). I earned a chunk of the the points from applying and getting the bonus (40,000 for $3k spend in 3 months + 20,000 additional for $3k more spend in 6 months). With points from the spend, transferring “orphaned” points from my husband and a small points purchase, I had the 90K points.

My understanding from reading blogs is that you won’t get an Opera House / harbor view with a standard room redemption. I’m only Discoverist and my husband is a lowly Member (no status), but this trip was to celebrate my 70th birthday and our upcoming 34th wedding anniversary while on this trip. So I had my husband email the hotel mentioning this, saying that I didn’t have status, but whatever they could do to make the stay special, he would appreciate it.

They gave us a room with a view to the Overseas Passenger Terminal so we saw a different cruise ship each day (we were leaving on a cruise when we checked out) and a view of the Opera House from our terrace. They also gave us some treats (non-alcoholic sparkling beverage since we don’t drink and fabulous little cakes).

We were so busy in Sydney (love that city!!!) that we didn’t spend any time in the hotel except in our room which was lovely. Since we don’t have status, we didn’t dine in the hotel, but had breakfast a 5 minute walk away in the Rocks (recommend Playfair Cafe!) and dinners elsewhere.

But it was a treat to stay in this hotel. We had been traveling for almost a week so we sent some laundry out to Wash on the Rocks (cheaper than Hyatt’s laundry service) and the concierge had it delivered to them to save part of the service fee, and they billed it to our room so we didn’t have to pay in cash or give an unknown business our credit card info on a paper form. Fantastic service – they even drove us around the corner to the ship!

I just stayed at Parisi Udvar in Budapest. It is a steal at Hyatt category 2 for only 8000 pts/ night. It is much nicer than the Westin in Warsaw and Intercontinental in Budapest. The only thing is the food at the hotel is relatively pricey, as you can find many Michelin star(s) restaurants in Budapest at affordable prices.

In reply to A D. I’ll second this. I also stayed at the Park Hyatt New York. 3 nights in January which I booked for 90,000 points. Cash price would have been ~$3,000.

Just got done booking 2 night in July at Park Hyatt New York for 30,000 points a night…. the cash rate for the 2 nights over $1700….Lovin Hyatt

I love Hyatt, but many, many times I’ve called to try to book a room at a Hyatt with points and have been told they “aren’t accepting points” for that location, or for my dates. I’ve been told both of those. Just be informed that using points doesn’t work out every time.
