Good info! I haven’t had the guts to go that route, but this in inspiring.

I didn’t peek inside an ocean bungalow while I was there, but there are a couple quick room tours on YouTube. It looks like the only “standard suite” (which is the only room type you can guarantee with a Suite Upgrade Award) is the King Bed Garden Suite.
The best rooms on the resort look to be the Oceanfront Bungalow Premier or the Oceanfront Bungalow with Hot Tub! So if you’ve got 60-night Globalist status, perhaps your concierge can pull some strings. That’s how we got a higher room category:D.

Which room type would be preferred for an upgrade? My wife and will wait for the upgrades as well and stay there in conjunction with a stay at the Andaz Maui.

You nailed it. Doing a day trip to Hana is such a missed opportunity. And the sunrise alone was worth the points!
The one thing I recommend, cautiously, is the “back-side” drive. After driving the “Road to Hana” to get to the resort, we continued in the same direction to take the back-side road back to central Maui. A few thoughts:
1) the climate and terrain changed a few times during this trip, from rainforest and waterfalls, to rocky cliffs, to desert, to high elevation, etc. It was remarkable.
2) the views are at least as beautiful, maybe more-so, than the Road to Hana (in my opinion)
3) There is virtually no traffic. The Road to Hana can become frustrating for the number of people driving it, stopping randomly to take pictures, or honking at you when you slow down for a picture. You have none of that on the back-side.
4) Thank goodness there is no traffic, as the road is somewhat treacherous. More than the Road to Hana itself. Note, rental companies often tell you that you can’t drive there, so make sure you are clear on this. Some question legality of this, but you can use your judgement.
5) There is no cell phone service, no gas stations, no restaurants for a lot of the route. So fill-up, and have snacks packed.
6) There are some great sites near the end of the trip if its your thing. The lavender farm, coffee tours, etc. are all on the route.
But whether you take it or not, Hana Hyatt is worth the visit.

Haha! Truthfully it’s not that bad if you’re the one driving. And if you don’t accelerate too strongly out of the turns.

It just doesn’t look nice enough for that amount of points or dollars.
